Pharr EDC Foundation Awards Over 120 Scholarships During Awards Ceremony

Pharr, Texas – On April 30, 2021, the Pharr EDC Foundation held their inaugural Scholarship Awards Ceremony and recognized over 120 scholarship recipients from throughout Pharr.

“It was truly an amazing evening as we recognized these outstanding young men and women for their educational accomplishments and aspirations,” said Victor Perez, President of the Pharr EDC Foundation and Executive Director of the Pharr EDC. “Through our scholarship, these students will now have the financial means to continue their higher education goals, and we are proud to be able to help our community and make this possible,” he added.

The Pharr EDC Foundation awarded over 120 scholarships, each at $2,000 ($1,000 per semester) for one academic year. The scholarship fund was created for students who are enrolling in a qualifying post-secondary institution.

“We had an amazing submission of applicants each who were equally outstanding and I would especially like to thank our Pharr EDC Foundation Board for their incredible work in choosing our inaugural scholarship recipients,” said Mayor Ambrosio Hernandez, M.D. who serves as the Pharr EDC Foundation Board Treasurer. “This scholarship will assist many students in achieving their academic goals through financial assistance and in the long run, it will help our economy grow and prosper,” continued Hernandez.

Students from the following districts were selected as scholarship recipients: PSJA North Early College High School, PSJA Southwest Early College High School, PSJA Thomas Jefferson T-STEM Early College High School, PSJA Early College High School, PSJA Memorial Early College High School, Vanguard Academy Rembrandt, Valley View High School, Hidalgo Early College High School, South Texas ISD Health Professions, South Texas ISD World Scholars, IDEA Pharr, IDEA Edinburg, IDEA Donna, and Premier High School.

The Pharr EDC Foundation awarded scholarships to the Class of 2021 as well as to eligible students from the Class of 2020. The scholarship supports students attending a higher education institution at all levels, whether for a trade or technical degree or a four-year university.

Pharr EDC Foundation Announces Scholarship Program for Pharr Students

The Pharr EDC Foundation, in partnership with the Pharr Economic Development Corporation (EDC) and the City of Pharr, is proud to announce that scholarship applications are now available for Pharr students.

The Pharr EDC Foundation will award a total of 150 scholarships, each at $2,000 ($1,000 per semester) for one academic year. Applications are available online at http://pharredc.com/foundation or can be picked up at the Pharr EDC (1215 S. Cage Blvd) in Pharr Monday through Friday between 8 am – 5 pm. The deadline to submit an application is Monday, April 12, 2021, by 5 pm.

“We are excited to open the Pharr EDC Foundation Scholarship to our Pharr community,” said Victor Perez, President of the Pharr EDC Foundation and Executive Director of the Pharr EDC. “There are many outstanding students in Pharr who are continuing their educational studies, but find themselves in need of financial assistance,” he added. “Our goal is to ensure that no student has to put their education on hold as they confront these challenges,” Perez continued.

The Scholarship Fund of the Pharr EDC Foundation was created for residents of the City of Pharr who are enrolling in a qualifying post-secondary institution. In order to apply for the Pharr EDC Foundation Scholarship, a candidate must meet the following requirements:

  • Reside in the City of Pharr
  • Be a current high school student graduating during the 2020-2021 school year
  • Have maintained a grade point average of at least 2.5
  • Submit completed application, essay/personal statement, and required documents no later than April 12, 2021

Completed applications should be submitted to [email protected].

An Advisory Committee composed of Foundation Board Members will review the applications and recommend recipients to the full Foundation Board of Directors. The Pharr EDC Foundation shall notify the chosen scholarship recipient(s) of its decision. All scholarship checks will be processed in a timely manner. Scholarship awards can be used for tuition, room & board, books, or other supplies.

High-Demand For Plasma

DHR Health Institute for Research and Development is facilitating the donation of plasma from recovered and suspected COVID-19 patients. Due to the critical increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations in the Rio Grande Valley, donated plasma will be used to treat patients in local hospitals who are fighting severe and life-threatening COVID-19 infections.

All eligible donors will undergo an antibody test during screening to determine the presence of antibodies in their blood. These results will be shared with the participant.

SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loans and Advance Program Reopened

WASHINGTON – To further meet the needs of U.S. small businesses and non-profits, the U.S. Small Business Administration reopened the Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) and EIDL Advance program portal to all eligible applicants experiencing economic impacts due to COVID-19 today.

“The SBA is strongly committed to working around the clock, providing dedicated emergency assistance to the small businesses and non-profits that are facing economic disruption due to the COVID-19 impact.  With the reopening of the EIDL assistance and EIDL Advance application portal to all new applicants, additional small businesses and non-profits will be able to receive these long-term, low-interest loans and emergency grants – reducing the economic impacts for their businesses, employees and communities they support,” said SBA Administrator Jovita Carranza.  “Since EIDL assistance due to the pandemic first became available to small businesses located in every state and territory, SBA has worked to provide the greatest amount of emergency economic relief possible.  To meet the unprecedented need, the SBA has made numerous improvements to the application and loan closing process, including deploying new technology and automated tools.

SBA’s EIDL program offers long-term, low interest assistance for a small business or non-profit.  These loans can provide vital economic support to help alleviate temporary loss of revenue.  EIDL assistance can be used to cover payroll and inventory, pay debt or fund other expenses.  Additionally, the EIDL Advance will provide up to $10,000 ($1,000 per employee) of emergency economic relief to businesses that are currently experiencing temporary difficulties, and these emergency grants do not have to be repaid.

SBA’s COVID-19 Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) and EIDL Advance

  • The SBA is offering low interest federal disaster loans for working capital to small businesses and non-profit organizations that are suffering substantial economic injury as a result of COVID-19 in all U.S. states, Washington D.C., and territories.
  • These loans may be used to pay debts, payroll, accounts payable and other bills that can’t be paid because of the disaster’s impact, and that are not already covered by a Paycheck Protection Program loan. The interest rate is 3.75% for small businesses.  The interest rate for non-profits is 2.75%.
  • To keep payments affordable for small businesses, SBA offers loans with long repayment terms, up to a maximum of 30 years. Plus, the first payment is deferred for one year.
  • In addition, small businesses and non-profits may request, as part of their loan application, an EIDL Advance of up to $10,000. The EIDL Advance is designed to provide emergency economic relief to businesses that are currently experiencing a temporary loss of revenue.  This advance will not have to be repaid, and small businesses may receive an advance even if they are not approved for a loan.
  • SBA’s EIDL and EIDL Advance are just one piece of the expanded focus of the federal government’s coordinated response.
  • The SBA is also assisting small businesses and non-profits with access to the federal forgivable loan program, the Paycheck Protection Program, which is currently accepting applications until June 30, 2020.
