Peña-Valdés: Make the AEM-COMCE RGV Tour a Permanent Event

The AEM-COMCE tour, organized by Francisco J. Peña-Valdés, brought more than 45 Mexican business owners to the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) to explore trade and investment opportunities.

The tour, which featured stops in McAllen, Pharr, and Brownsville, aimed to connect Mexican entrepreneurs with local leaders and businesses to foster collaboration.

The Pharr Economic Development Corporation (EDC) played a pivotal role during the tour. Pharr EDC President Victor Perez, Economic Business Development Director Lilvette Santos, and other city officials welcomed the Mexican delegation at the Pharr One Center, where presentations and panel discussions on real estate, business opportunities, and economic growth were held.

Pharr’s cold storage capabilities are expanding, thanks to a planned construction by LakeWay Produce’s sister company, Greenway Construction. Over two phases, the building will grow from an initial 50,000 square feet to a final 94,000 square feet of cold storage space.

The construction comes on the heels of another Greenway-built cold storage facility that opened earlier this year with a total of 44,000 square feet of space. Ramon Mery, CEO of LakeWay Produce and Greenway Construction has publicly praised Pharr and the surrounding area for providing an environment where produce companies can be “more competitive, more efficient, and better positioned.”

According to Pharr EDC President, Victor Perez, the warehouse is part of a number of projects coming to Pharr that together will provide a million square feet in facilities. Perez also noted that Pharr’s rich quality of life will continue to attract investors and their families, allowing the city to grow. The development is poised to create job opportunities and drive further investment in the region, reinforcing Pharr’s position as a thriving hub for industrial and commercial activity.

Pharr EDC resurrects plans to create a new Foreign Trade Zone

The Pharr EDC and Hidalgo County are resurrecting plans to establish a new Foreign Trade Zone in the area, aiming to enhance economic growth and attract businesses.

What Pharr EDC President Victor Perez calls a “regional” project could include a number of RGV cities, including Donna, Weslaco, Edinburg, and potentially others. It would join 4 other FTZs in the Rio Grande Valley, in a response to the growth of activity at the Pharr International Bridge.

While the timeline for the project is not yet set. he FTZ designation will provide companies with cost-saving benefits, including exemptions on duties and tariffs for imported goods. By creating this zone, Pharr hopes to increase trade and investment opportunities, further solidifying its position as a strategic hub for international commerce.
